Jim McCormick

A rich baritone and lyrics from the heart frame Jim McCormick’s country music. His songs have been recorded by Anders Osborne, Mulebone, Theresa Anderson, Kim Carson, the Bingemen (of which he was lead singer throughout most of the '90s), and the Swinging Haymakers and featured in film and television productions. He has performed at clubs and festivals throughout the United States, including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival; the South By Southwest Music Conference in Austin, TX; Norfolk, Va.’s Bayou Boogaleaux Festival; the New Orleans French Quarter Festival; the Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival; and the All Folks Festival. He has shared performance bills with Guy Clark, Deana Carter, Keith Urban, Charlie Robison, Jack Ingram, Anders Osborne, David Lindley, Kevin Gordon, the subdudes, Sonny Landreth, the Neville Brothers, Dan Bern, Continental Drifters, the Radiators, Cowboy Mouth, Pat McLaughlin, and many others. Throughout the 90's he was the lead singer for the now-defunct country-rock band The Bingemen. In August 2001 McCormick released his debut solo record, on which he is accompanied through 12 songs by Tommy Malone (subdudes); Anders Osborne; John Thomas Griffith, Rob Savoy, and Fred LeBlanc (Cowboy Mouth); Susan Cowsill (the Cowsills, Continental Drifters); Theresa Anderson; John Gros (George Porter); Mike Barras (Mulebone); Skeet Hanks and Mike Mayeux (Beaten Path); Bill Berry; and Mark Whitaker (Woodenhead). His debut CD's lead-off track, "Take Me Home With You," was selected as one of ten finalists in the "In The Beginning: A Songwriter’s Tribute To Garth Brooks" songwriting contest. McCormick is the Regional Coordinator for the non-profit Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI). As part of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) Grammy in the Schools, he leads an annual workshop entitled “The Art and Craft of Songwriting” for high school students in the New Orleans area. Throughout the year he teaches young people about songwriting at the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center and the New Orleans Public Library. He has lectured at Loyola University on the Craft and Business of Songwriting and acted as panelist for the Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association National Conference. He is a partner in independent music publishing company Caffeine Music, an active member of NARAS, and founder and host of the monthly New Orleans Songwriters Night, now in its fourth year. He has been voted by Gambit Weekly's readers a Best of New Orleans music performer, was a nominee for Citysearch.Com’s Best Local Songwriter Award, and runner up for OffBeat Magazine's Best Male Vocalist Award. He has been awarded a scholarship to the 3rd annual Future of Music Coalition Summit in Washington D.C. in 2003, a forum for musicians, lawyers, academics, policymakers and music industry executives to come together to discuss and debate issues surrounding digital technology, artists’ rights and the current state of the music industry.. McCormick holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from the University of New Orleans.
